1st Vaccination

L got her first shot today, the DTaP vaccine. She only screamed for a few seconds and was fine immediately afterward.

We are choosing to do a delayed or alternative immunization schedule, where the child is only given 1-2 shots at a time vs. as many as 4-6 lumped together per the CDC's recommended schedule. The theory is this limits the chances for a severe reaction, and there is less chance that the child will develop fever or diarrhea after each shot. The vaccines are spaced out over several years rather than getting all 3-4 doses of most vaccines within baby's first year.

It is somewhat difficult to find pediatricians in St. Louis that will follow an alternative vaccination schedule, but we are fortunate to have one. Immunizations are a controversial topic these days and a personal decision for each family. There is constantly new research taking place to try and understand the risks & benefits of vaccines and their timetables for administration.

This link shows a comparison of 2 vaccine timelines.

By the way, L weighed in at 12 pounds at the Dr's office today.
